Lofoten Winter Light
Seven days above the Arctic Circle, planned for the weather
The shape of it
Rorbuer on a working harbour, a cod boat at first light, and six hours of blue twilight a day to spend outside in it.
In February the sun in Lofoten barely clears the ridgeline, which means the blue hour lasts for most of the usable day and the light does things that photographers travel a long way for.
Ingrid writes this itinerary with a stated alternative for every day, because half of them will move. You get a card on arrival with today's plan, tonight's aurora probability and what happens instead if the wind turns. In four winters we have never lost a whole trip and we have moved a great many afternoons.
You stay in rorbuer — the red fishermen's cabins on stilts — on a harbour that still works, and then two nights in a sail loft at Reine with a granite wall opposite that turns pink for twenty minutes a day.

Who plans this journey
Ingrid Halvorsen
The North · planning since 2016
Ingrid came to us from a sea-kayak operation in Troms and has spent ten winters in the archipelago. She writes every Lofoten itinerary with a stated alternative for each day, which is the only honest way to plan there.
She is a competent small-boat skipper and will happily tell you when a crossing is a bad idea, including when you have already paid for it.
Known for: The card travellers get on arrival: today's plan, tonight's aurora probability, and what happens instead if the wind turns.
