Ballstad Rorbuer

Fishermen's cabins on the water in a working harbour, with a wood stove and a drying rack outside.

Rorbuer are the red cabins on stilts that the seasonal cod fishermen used, and these are the real thing rather than a reproduction: nine of them, on the quay at Ballstad, with wood stoves, thick walls and windows facing the sound.

The harbour still works. Boats go out at five and come back at two, and the noise of it is part of the deal.

What we like

  • Cabin 3, which has the light on both sides
  • Coming in from a cold boat to a stove that someone lit for you
  • That you can see the aurora from the bed if the sky cooperates

Worth knowing. These are cabins, not suites. Heating is a stove plus electric panels, and the walk to the car park is exposed. In February that is part of the experience, but it is worth knowing.
