Stromboli by night boat
Out at dusk, then sitting offshore below the Sciara del Fuoco while the volcano works.
A wooden boat, eight people maximum, leaving at dusk. You cross with the light going, eat on board, and then the engine is cut below the Sciara del Fuoco — the black scar down the north-west face where everything the volcano throws out rolls into the sea.
Stromboli erupts in small bursts every twenty minutes or so and has done for around two thousand years. From the water, at night, it is one of the things travellers remember for the rest of their lives.
