Maringi Retreat

Ten pavilions on a limestone bluff, with a training programme for local staff that is the real story.

Ten open pavilions along a bluff on the south-west coast, with a long pool on the edge of it and a restaurant that grows most of what it serves.

The reason we use it is the hospitality school attached: roughly forty Sumbanese trainees a year, and a staff that is almost entirely local as a result.

What we like

  • The pavilions at the far end, which have the view and none of the noise
  • Breakfast, which is better than it has any right to be
  • That your money visibly stays on the island

Worth knowing. It is an hour and forty minutes from the airport on a road that is only partly sealed. Go straight there and stay four nights; do not day-trip from it.
