Guesthouse · Kyoto and the Nakasendo
Minshuku Tsutaya
A family guesthouse in Tsumago, on the old post road, with dinner at six and a bath before it.
Five tatami rooms above a family kitchen in the middle of Tsumago, which after the last day-trip bus leaves is one of the quietest places we send anyone.
Dinner is river fish, mountain vegetables and a great deal of rice, served at six. The bath is shared and taken before dinner. Neither of these is negotiable and both are part of why people remember it.
What we like
- The hour after the coaches leave, when the street is yours
- Grilled ayu with salt, in season
- That your bag arrives before you do
Worth knowing. Rooms have futons on tatami and a shared bathroom. It is simple by design. Travellers who want a hotel should tell us and we will book Nagiso instead.
