The Nishijin looms
A working obi weaver's studio in the textile district, with interpreting.
Nishijin has been weaving in Kyoto for about five hundred years and is now down to a few hundred working looms. This is one of them: a family firm producing obi on a jacquard loom that takes several weeks per piece.
You will watch, ask a great many questions through an interpreter, and be shown the drafting that happens before a single thread is thrown. It is not a demonstration laid on for visitors.
