The Kiso post road on foot
Tsumago to Magome and beyond, uphill, on stone-paved sections of the old highway.
The Nakasendo ran inland between Kyoto and Edo, and a genuine stretch of it survives through the Kiso Valley: stone paving, cedar forest, bear bells on posts, and post towns that have kept their frontages.
Three days of four to six hours' walking, staying in minshuku, with bags moved ahead by van. We send travellers uphill, north to south, which is an hour longer and considerably better.
